Marijuana Laws & Legislation in Kiryat Ata

Israel is one of the leading countries in terms of cannabis reform. As of 2025, medical cannabis has been legal in Kiryat Ata since 1999, and patients with qualifying conditions, such as chronic pain or cancer, can access cannabis-based treatments through a prescription. Israel has one of the most advanced medical cannabis programs in the world. In 2018, Israel also began the process of decriminalizing recreational marijuana for adults, allowing individuals to possess up to 15 grams of marijuana without facing criminal charges. Cultivation of cannabis for personal use is also permitted, but the public consumption of marijuana remains illegal. Israel continues to be at the forefront of cannabis research, with significant advancements in medical cannabis treatments. The country is also discussing full marijuana legalization for recreational use, but it has not been fully realized yet.

Please note that marijuana laws are subject to change. For the most current information, consult your country’s official resources or legal counsel.

Law Enforcement

  • Personally, at night, I smoke a joint while walking on the street and never had problems. Still, I would be just a bit careful and aware of any police approaching.

Where to Buy Marijuana in Kiryat Ata

  • As a tourist, any man with long hair will usually love to help 🙂 also young people wearing hippie-style clothing. However, there are very few of those types in Kiryat Ata. It’s better to try in the nearby kibbutzim of Ramat-Yohanan, Kfar HaMaccabi, and Usha.
  • There are a LOT of dealers in Kiryat Ata, but most of them are suspicious, and you need to know someone to get a ‘ticket’ in.
  • In other Krayot cities nearby, it might be easier to find people with the ‘stoner look.’ I’d recommend Kiryat Bialik for that.

Marijuana Prices

  • Homegrown weed (called “hydro” among smokers, even though it might be grown in soil) – 50-80 NIS per gram, but very hard to get in Kiryat Ata. Try central Israel for that.
  • Egyptian Ganja50 NIS per matchbox-sized pack (~5 grams). 100 NIS for 25 grams. 150-200 NIS for 50 grams.
  • Hash100 NIS for 5 grams.
  • Charas300-500 NIS for 10 grams. Very hard to get.

🔹 Currency Exchange (as of November 2007)
1 New Israeli Shekel (NIS) ≈ 4 USD ≈ 5.5 Euro ≈ 10 Indian Rupees

Marijuana Brands

  • Today (as of November 2007), it’s very hard to get cheap weed in Israel. Egyptian weed has many seeds and stems, but sometimes it can be decent. Since the Egyptian border has been sealed with more law enforcement, people have started growing at home for sale, but in Kiryat Ata, it’s still hard to get.
  • Hash is easier to get, mainly from Lebanon or Afghanistan:
    • Lebanese Hash – Relatively bright, soft, and has a mild high. Another variant is darker and very hard, called “Adolan” (though this name is often misleading).
    • Afghani Hash – Dark but softer than Lebanese varieties.
    • Some talk about Moroccan hash, but most of the time, it’s just another name for the Lebanese stuff.
  • Indian Charas – Only available if you know someone who recently returned from India and was bold enough to bring some back.

More Information

  • Kiryat Ata has nothing to offer tourists 🙂
  • If you want better access to cannabis, nearby cities like Haifa or Tel Aviv would be a better option.
